Even 2 years earlier ;) The important fact is that it is never too late! Spread the word about us for other parents! They have to know.

I started to look for a piano teacher for Ivan when he was 3 but it is hard for a teacher to work with toddler for 30 mins.

No piano teacher can provide the eye training for music the way Soft Mozart does. This is exactly why many piano teachers use Soft Mozart as a tool for their students today.

I think parents know his child better and SoftMozart help parents to train piano/music for their child. Even practicing short time every day, we can see improvement little by little.

You are absolutely right. We have to give children environment and the access to the music education. I am very happy that you found us, Sharry!

We will keep practicing. Learning piano gave Ivan challenge but also gave Ivan confidence with practicing.
Thank you.[/quote]

I am not a piano teacher so I have some professional questions
1. In Prep Level B, there is exercise for Gentle Piano and Sight-reading with the Gentle Piano.
What is different? What is purpose of Sight-reading? When we do Sight-reading what should we pay attention? Is it OK we use L3/R3/P3 instead of L4/R4/P4 for Sight-reading?

2. When Ivan is well familiar with a song (ie Hot Cross Buns) with P4, should he go to P5?
I kind of feeling P5 and P6 is different level. It probably need to learn the position (line and space) of the notes first (ie learn flash card or play Treble Staff Puzzle). Or we should wait until we go to another lesson plan?
When he can memorize a song by P4 and PH, then we use teaching video until he plays well. Then we can stop? I have a video he played with teaching video in this post. Does he need to do more enhancement?

This is process for last week

Sharry, very good question! In classical music education, there are 2 goals in learning piano: the artistic performance (quality) and sight-reading (quantity).
Soft Mozart is a tool that you use to build both naturally.
The rule of thumb is the more challenging the song for the coordination and piano technique development - the more visual support it requires.
Therefore, the Introductory songs with 3 music notes at once are being advised to play on the modes with pictures.
It is also better to practice them with the metronome and polishing videos.
The songs for sight-reading shouldn't be polished, but our goal is the eye-sight development to read all lines and spaces on the fly. The less mistakes – the better. This is the goal. Therefore, it is better to use 2,4,5 and 6 modes (with no pictures) to help vision of your child to grasp Grand Staff quickly.

2. When Ivan is well familiar with a song (ie Hot Cross Buns) with P4, should he go to P5?

Not necessary. Most likely, he remembers the piece and will just pretend that he is reading the notes. Better to play more piano pieces and sight-read more Albums as suggested in the lesson plan.

I kind of feeling P5 and P6 is different level. It probably need to learn the position (line and space) of the notes first (ie learn flash card or play Treble Staff Puzzle). Or we should wait until we go to another lesson plan?

The main idea is gentle learning, smooth and gradual. It is better to stay on 1 and 2 to fully learn how the music notes and piano keys are connected. No rush! We want successful child that loves challenges and being ready for them. We can make him learn on 5 and 6, but won’t achieve a lot. Frustration is not going to help him.

When he can memorize a song by P4 and PH, then we use teaching video until he plays well.

Better to use P1 or P3 (or even R1 and R3, L1 and L3) for the memorization. The less challenges – the better.

Then we can stop?

After memorizing and playing with video, you can stop and record the piece for the recital.

I have a video he played with teaching video in this post. Does he need to do more enhancement?

He can try playing the piece with the no metronome video. After that you may record it. Done! ;)
You are doing an excellent job! I am impressed!

Thanks Hellene for explanation.

Now I know what I should focus when working on sight-reading exercise. I think this is good exercise for him to study Grand Staff.
Ivan is kind of having good memory especially when we both sang a piece few time.
He started to remember most notes and 60% time played based on his memory.
He still looked at Grand Staff when he forgot the note.
This situation is similar with his reading skill. He quick remembered sentences in a book after listening and people though he known how to read while he did not.
We will browse more pieces for him to practice sight-reading. Hopefully he will gradually learn how to read Grand Staff .

Thank you.

I did not post for a while so the following progress contains 2 weeks practice.
1. Ivan was working on Chromatic Scale for single hand for a while. We are moving to both hands. It is really really hard to work on both hands and he want to quit frequently. I think it will take a while before he can get used to this exercise.
2. Recently, he figured out the meaning of the score and started to pay a lot attention to the score. He would rather to play very slow to avoid mistake or asked to restart in the middle if he made one mistake. This situation is obvious when software is delay so he thought he made a mistake. If he can't play perfect score, he sometimes give up without finish song. Furthermore, he asked me why the correct score is 1 point short while he played no mistake. (I don't know why either).

3. His fingers look not correct (ie he played jingle bell below used index fingers more often), should I correct him? On the other hand, if he played a song that beyond Do-So, I probably don't know how to correct him.

Hello, Sharry!

Yes, this is very hard and there is no rush. This exercise is very beneficial for child's brain - especially the corpus callosum (the bridge between right and left), because fingers are not used synchronically.

2. Recently, he figured out the meaning of the score and started to pay a lot attention to the score. Computer just a machine and can't control slightest touches. If your son in the stage of being 'perfectionist', let him play a small segment of the piece by cutting it from the rest of the score. It would be also helpful to play the part 2 times and compare the score, because instead of focusing on 'perfect' figure it teaches the child to see his own growth and enjoy the accomplishment.

3. His fingers look not correct (ie he played jingle bell below used index fingers more often), should I correct him? On the other hand, if he played a song that beyond Do-So, I probably don't know how to correct him.

He just started developing in the 'fingers management stage'. He is on the right way. I would avoid the correction now.

Numbers look much above average for his age. He is good.

The videos show that he passed learning to focus and shift focus stage, his eye-hand coordination is excellent, fingers' awareness almost accomplished, coordination of both hands is excellent, voice-sight-reading and motor skills is very good.

You are on the right track
