Music and Computer Technology at School in the Digital Age: University adopts computer program "Soft Way to Mozart" to put an end to the problem of music sight-reading.

On March 26 – 27, 2014, the first international workshop for music professors in Russia will be held by the renowned musicologist Hellene Hiner at the Herzen State Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Department of UML--Music and Computer Technologies--will host the event.

The essence of this unique software system is a discovery of global importance: it provides piano students of all levels with a solution to reading and memorizing music notation.

The invention is based on the fundamental physiological principles of human vision and the psychology of visual perception of small abstract objects. With the help of computer technology, notes are presented at the point of optimal recognition, allowing any beginner (even 2-year old children) to play the piano and read music from Grand Staff using both hands from the very beginning.

Such a possibility is difficult to overestimate, given the impact that exercising fine motor skills and learning music have on the development of the human brain. This also creates an opportunity to teach an entire community to read music as easily as we read books.

The inventor of the system "Soft Way to Mozart" is Hellene Hiner, an American and a graduate of the Russian School of Music.

Hiner’s Teaching Course, "Interactive Learning in the 21st Century : 'Soft Way to Mozart'," is designed for students of university professors, as well as music educators and has now been approved by the Academic Council in Russia for use in early 2014 . The full course of study for students and teachers consists of 24 academic hours of lectures and workshops.

Prior to the March conference, the software course was piloted on a group of musically illiterate students from different departments across the university. Then on the second day of the conference, these students will present a recital to the attendees. After only one month of study, these students will be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of this invention in teaching piano to new students.

During the thirteen years of its existence, the system "Soft Way to Mozart" has been approved by the Ministries of Culture of UK, Spain , Russia and Kazakhstan, and is being utilized in fifty-two different countries in schools, universities and other educational institutions. With the help of "Soft Way to Mozart," even very young beginners won prizes in Israel, Spain and Ukraine piano competitions. This international success is exciting.

However, the fundamental goal of the course is spreading music literacy through public schools in America as well as other countries. Piano/keyboards are considered the starting point of music education since piano keys and the spaces and lines of the Grand Staff offer a bold, visual connection with each other.
